Foreword

In pursuit of our Lakshya plans, our carefully calibrated entry into new age businesses like semi-conductors and data centres, sharp focus on developing and growing our existing and emerging ‘green’ businesses, constant attention to making our systems and processes sustainable, increasing adoption of technological and digital solutions are all vital pieces in our strategic effort to reposition ourselves as a smarter, future-focused and technologically advanced conglomerate. An equally important and relevant step towards this end has been the launch of our new corporate advertising campaign in the mass media.

The campaign that you must have seen in some of the country’s leading publications showcases some of our iconic projects across businesses signing off with a new tagline — Just Leap. Arrived at after much debate and brainstorming, our new baseline aims to communicate not just a leap of faith but one of certainty in staying true to our Vision and our collective capability to continue making the projects that make India and the world proud. At the same time, the campaign invites our various stakeholders, and the public at large who we touch every day with our various projects, to take a leap along with us to build the future together.

Each one of us carries a huge responsibility

While the campaign is certainly external facing, it also has a strong, underlying, extremely critical inward focus for it celebrates each one of us for being the force behind all that we have achieved: innovative thinking, leadership, teamwork, and focus to keep delivering the tallest, largest, longest, smartest and the most complex of infrastructure projects. Therefore, it puts a huge responsibility on all of us, irrespective of businesses, functions, departments, ents, levels and cadres, to ‘live’ the brand by being Ambassadors of Brand L&T. By acting collectively, it is imperative for us to present to the outside world a cohesive, relevant and meaningful face of the organization.

Recent research has revealed that sometimes the voice of the employee is more credible than that of senior leadership, putting the onus on all of you to understand and appreciate your critical role in furthering everything that is in our best interests and always deliver nothing but the best.

Never forget that we are always in the public glare

By the very nature of our business, we are constantly exposed to the glare of the public eye. Everything that we do or say is immediately captured in the media — social or mass, often magnified out of proportion and broadcast to people who have very little knowledge or stakes in the company to form and influence opinions.

Unfortunately, we have little control over what people do or say especially in social media, but it is in our power to control perceptions and that is where our corporate campaign aims to score. It has been conceived and designed to create in our audiences, an affinity for the company, an appreciation for all that we do for them, endow Brand L&T with a positive aura that will get people to be favourably disposed towards the Company.

This issue of ECC News based on the theme of Acing Speed & Scale with Technology features several young talents who are excelling at their various project sites, who, without exception, consider it an honour to be a part of L&T. The strength of any brand lies in that feeling of oneness and sense of belonging to be prevalent right through the ranks. If we, as an organization, have lived up to what we promise, it is certainly on the strength of our collective commitment and willingness to stretch the extra mile to deliver to our clients. It is a great tradition to have. We must keep it alive and growing.

In terms of revenue, order backlog and profitability, we are in a good space, but we cannot afford to drop our guard. We must not only keep a good thing going but improve upon it. There are plenty of opportunities for us to capitalize.

All the best!

A HISTORIC SIGNING FOR INDIA’S LARGEST EPC MANDATE TILL DATE

November 26th 2020 was a red letter day both for the Indian infrastructure sector and for us as the contract for the largest EPC order awarded in the country till date was signed between L&T and the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited. As our CEO & Managing Director, Mr S N Subrahmanyan described, “this order reflects an inflection point in the revival of India’s infrastructure sector and the first sure shot indication that our economy is up and running.” For L&T, it represents a great opportunity to make up for lost ground due to the pandemic and reaffirm our status as India’s foremost construction organization.

The mandate is for the design and construction of 237 km of viaduct between Vapi and Vadodara in Gujarat, four stations, a depot at Surat, 14 river, 6 railway & 42 road crossings and a 350 M long mountain tunnel.

“This project will give a huge thrust to economic and social development,” declared Whole Time Director & Senior Executive Vice
President (Civil Infrastructure), S V Desai, for whom and his team, the mandate is not only a huge win but an even bigger responsibility. “The project will generate employment for professionals like engineers, technicians, designers, architects and create livelihoods for skilled and semi-skilled workforce and construction workers. It will boost demand for construction material and machinery and even ancillary industries like hospitality, entertainment, health, tourism, real estate & housing and education will flourish during the construction phase,” he elaborated.
