Driving safety the B&F way by ‘Learning from Incidents’

‘Learning from Incidents’

Release of the LFI module by the IC Head and other business leaders

Undoubtedly, one of the most powerful tools to improve safety performance is taking advantage of the cumulative experience that resides with all the employees of L&T Construction. “Every incident, however minor, offers a chance to learn, improve, and prevent future occurrences,” observes P Nagarajan, Head – EHS (RCF SBG), B&F IC, “but the key is in systematically capturing and documenting this world of experience to ensure that it is easily accessible and actionable for everyone across our organization.”

Launching the ‘Learning from Incidents’ module

In response to Nagarajan’s observation, B&F IC has launched the ‘Learning from Incidents’ module, a new digital online initiative to help all employees seamlessly integrate critical safety learnings into their planning and execution processes. Marking a significant milestone in the IC’s safety journey, the module launched by Senior Vice President & IC Head, Sthaladipti Saha (SDS), during the recent EHS Management Review Meeting, houses valuable insights and corrective actions derived from incidents over the past ten years. The goal is clear: Empower every employee to access and apply these learnings in their daily activity planning and execution. Developed in-house by the B&F IC digital team, it is presently accessible to all B&F employees.

One module. Many advantages.

  • Comprehensive Database

Curated learnings from incidents spanning the past decade, supporting proactive safety planning.

  • Ease of Access

Available on both mobile and web platforms for all employees. Simply use your L&T credentials to log in and get started.

  • User-Friendly Search Options

Search for relevant EHS alerts by activity, hazard, hazardous event, or through free-text keywords – making it quick and easy to find what you need.

  • Data Protection & Anonymity

All information is in the form of anonymized EHS alerts with no reference to specific projects or personnel. Alerts are view-only and include appropriate disclaimers to maintain confidentiality.

Where the module comes in most handy

The ‘Learning from Incidents’ module has been designed for practical applications at various stages of project planning and execution.

  • Initial Planning

Refer to the module to select safer methodologies and implement higher-order risk controls based on past learnings.

  • Method Statements & HIRA Preparation

Integrate relevant learnings into Method Statements and Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA) to enhance risk mitigation.

  • Pre-task Workplace Verification

Before deploying workers, verify that key preventive actions from similar incidents have been effectively implemented.

  • Corrective Action Implementation

Track and confirm the implementation and effectiveness of corrective actions at site level using insights from the module.

Rollout, Monitoring, and Continuous Improvement

To ensure easy access and awareness, a dedicated poster with the module link and QR code has been circulated and prominently displayed on noticeboards across all project sites. Usage of the module is being monitored through access logs and is regularly reviewed by IC and cluster-level teams. Additionally, the repository is continuously updated with valuable external learnings relevant to B&F projects.

“By making effective use of this powerful tool, we aim to reinforce our commitment to safety excellence and move a significant step closer to achieving our vision of Zero Harm,” sums up Nagarajan confidently.
