Devika Vipin
Diploma Engineer Trainee,
Heavy Civil Infrastructure IC
Even though at her first project with L&T at the Chennai Metro Rail, Devika Vipin is crystal clear of her goal to become an ace TBM Operator. “I am thrilled to explore the various facets of TBM operations,” she says with the infectious excitement of a newcomer, “about geological challenges and innovative solutions, complex navigation systems, infrastructure impact considerations, stringent safety protocols, integration of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems and more.”
For one still taking her baby steps into her career, Devika is acutely aware that as a TBM operator, one of her prime considerations will be to ensure a safe working environment for the crew. “My challenges will include maintaining precise navigation and alignment, managing geotechnical risks such as unstable ground conditions and water infiltration, and promptly addressing mechanical issues,” she mentions with a wisdom that belies her age and experience. “As a TBM Operator, I have to be extremely adaptable,” she says, gesturing with her hands, “to changing ground conditions, unexpected obstacles, and varying rock or soil compositions that demand flexibility and problem-solving skills.”
That she is up for the challenges ahead is evident in her equanimity, recalling a critical safety moment during a rebar unloading operation from a trailer when a rigger’s right thumb was crushed. “The incident occurred when a chain sling was jerked while preparing a safe lifting position, despite having in place a wooden sleeper as improvised protection (IP). Fortunately, immediate first aid treatment was provided by the site male nurse. That was a close call that highlighted the importance of proper sling management, effective communication, and thorough risk assessments,” she nods assertively.
Devika is already a proud L&T-ite, holding the Company in high regard for the values of integrity, safety and customer satisfaction it embodies. “It is L&T’s commitment to excellence and social responsibility that inspires me to make a positive impact,” she affirms, noting that her seniors and team members have been incredibly supportive in her development. “Their active mentorship, expertise and experience sharing have significantly enhanced my understanding of machine operations, and their constructive feedback and support not only boosts my confidence but empowers me too as a female on site, reinforcing my ability to excel in this role,” she remarks resolutely.
A Keralite, and single, Devika’s family is her father, Vipin, a businessman, mother, Raji S R, a homemaker, and younger sister, Aradhya M V who is in 6th standard. “As a busy professional with a 12-hour day, I hardly find time for hobbies,” she laughs; “however, I make it a priority to listen to music, watch movies and spend quality time with my family and friends, creating lasting memories,” she signs off, flashing a disarming smile.
