BUSY LIVING EVERY ENGINEER’S DREAM
Deepak Kumar Nath
Assistant Manager (Electrical Execution), Railways SBG
Meet Deepak Kumar Nath, Section In-charge at the IRCON NFR Package-2, EPC-6 Project. “It’s any engineer’s dream to work at such a prestigious company like L&T,” and the day he set foot in the Company, he made a dream debut, after which it has all been great going. “My seniors have always encouraged me to take on more responsibilities and given me ample scope and freedom to learn, which has driven me to push boundaries and achieve my best. I always tell my friends that L&T empowers you to take decisions and transforms you into a leader,” he declares emphatically, with eyes shining.
Deepak fondly recalls the appreciation from an IRCON official after commissioning a section under his responsibility. “He praised me for the timely completion of the section, admiring L&T as a construction ‘giant’, which made me feel proud to be an L&T-ite!” his chest swells up with pride. Earlier, as OHE In-charge at a section of the Roha– Verna Konkan Railway Electrification Project, Deepak took care of exhaustive site management, including erection & commissioning of the railway OHE works.
Presently, at the IRCON NFR Project, the team is challenged by the remote location of the site in a hilly terrain, with the added issues of logistics owing to unstable ground conditions. Overcoming these challenges, Deepak has mobilized more than 200 skilled OHE workmen along with specialized subcontractors to keep the project on track. “I continuously monitor productivity and motivate the workmen to work proactively to complete the project within the committed time, and within the approved budgets,” he notes.
JCB-mounted cranes for mast erection work have greatly improved productivity, thanks to which the team erected 100 masts in 200 minutes, a significant achievement in OHE works, shares Deepak.
He is all praise for his Project Manager, Debashis Manasranjan Aich, for providing him ample opportunities to express himself and prove his capability. “It has also won me appreciation from both our Client and our higher management,” he adds with a smile.
A native of Ramachandrapur village in Kendrapara District, Odisha, Deepak is married to Sushree Sangita Nayak, a homemaker. They are blessed with a daughter, Devasmita, who is studying in Class 1, and a son, Divyansu, who is 2 years old. When free from the pressures of site work, Deepak lets out steam by playing cricket.
LEARNING AND GROWING WITH L&T
Malay Das
Engineer (Civil), Railways SBG
After completing his diploma in civil engineering, Malay Das’s dream came true when he joined L&T in 2017 as a Diploma Engineer Trainee. “After being associated with the largest company in the construction industry, I have learnt all aspects of civil engineering and got the opportunity to implement my learning at the various projects that I have been a part of,” he says, visibly excited. His association began with a stint at the OPGC MGR WP Project, followed by another at the CORE EPC 7 Project, and presently he is at the IRCON NFR Package 2.
“Starting from execution to delivery, any work assigned to me by my site management requires effective planning, implementation, monitoring as well as final delivery to the client,” he shares, “and I am extremely proud when I see the civil structures built under my supervision and thereby successfully delivering the organization’s goals towards the Client. During my stint at the site, I received appreciation both from our Client and the end user, North East Frontier Railway, for the quality of my execution that they said reflected the brand values of L&T Construction,” he shares, with a huge sense of achievement.
Located in the northeastern part of India, getting skilled trade workers to his site for their various civil activities has been very tough. “After studying the situation, I proactively decided to develop and train local workers deployed by sub-contractors in various civil departments,” says Malay with josh. “Immediately, our execution work started and most of the works in the Assam part are very close to completion.” The team’s decision to change the designated location plans of PSI locations has saved them a major chunk of earth filling quantity and, subsequently, cost-saving in the area development works.
In sync with the organization’s thrust to go digital, Malay’s contribution is to issue materials through M-Track, correspond with all site execution activities through digital platforms, and even procure client approvals digitally. He nods, saying that digital solutions are driving site progress.
Appreciative of his senior management, Malay says, “Under the guidance of Mr Suvajit Gupta and Mr Debashis Manasranjan Aich, I have had the opportunity to learn various aspects of civil execution and implement the same at the site.”
Still single, Malay, who hails from Singur in West Bengal’s Hooghly district, loves to watch and play cricket and football, and find out new things when he is free from living his passion, which is constructing landmarks.
“I AM IN LOVE WITH A COMPANY THAT CARES!”
Abhinav Sharma
Assistant Construction Manager (Electrical), Railways SBG
“No, it is not the paycheck or the brand name or even the position or title one has, it is all about having a ‘Human First’ attitude,“ is how young Abhinav Sharma describes his ‘love affair’ with L&T, which he joined as a GET in 2018. “The actions taken over the past few weeks of taking care of both the employees and customers are simply unprecedented, and not in my wildest dreams did I think that a profit-making company would think and care about its employees and customers to this extent.” It is always ‘How are you?’ and ‘How is your family doing?’ rather than ‘What is the status of the project?’ or ‘When will it be completed?’ and that is why he declares, “I am in love with the company I work for.”
Abhinav’s ‘love affair’ began at the Konkan Railway Project, where he and the team completed 147 km from start to commissioning. “We achieved some remarkable progress, completing 22 boom erections, 140 SEDs, 15 foundations, 70 groutings, and over 200 bracket erections in a single day.” Released after four years, he joined the IRCON NFR Package-2 in 2022, where his immediate challenges were unapproachable roads, lack of support from the contractors unwilling to go to this remote part of northeast India, heavy monsoons, and extremely poor soil quality.
Trolleys and BFR were used to shift the foundation as well as OHE materials due to the inaccessible roads to meet their commissioning target. Apart from increasingly engaging local vendors, the team resorts to same-day casting to combat the poor soil quality. On the heels of the praise he received at the completion of the Konkan Railway Project, where he fondly recalls the implementation of the AJAX machine, BFR and excavators for hard rock excavation and FTRC, Abhinav is delighted that their work at the IRCON Project is also winning the client’s appreciation.
About his personal equation with his seniors and team members, he says, “Whatever I have achieved or am achieving is because someone is always showing me the right way. When I get demotivated, my seniors are always there as my best friends to show me the right path.” For greater connect within the team, he mentions the formation of ‘aggregation’, social, mobilization and learning platforms to align, collaborate, share insights, and build long-term relationships to realize true potential.
LEARNING TO PUSH BOUNDARIES
Golok Chandra Mohanty
Senior Engineer (OHE), Railways SBG
His responses leave us in no doubt that at L&T, Golok Mohanty has found his true calling. “Joining L&T was my dream come true,” he asserts for good measure. At the IRCON NFR Project, he is enjoying his first taste of construction and has found the environment both enabling and invigorating.
“In the short span that I have been here, L&T has encouraged me to take on more and more responsibilities and, at the same time, given me great opportunities to prove my capabilities, which in turn drives me to strive harder, do more, and push my boundaries to achieve the best,” he declares, with all the josh of a newcomer who is learning the ropes fast and enjoying the experience.
Turning his attention to the project that he is executing, Golok shares, “I mobilized more than 150 skilled OHE workers along with specialized subcontractors from time to time to drive and expedite project progress. I have also personally initiated the night block work activities to push progress more,” he adds, obviously satisfied with his efforts towards the project team’s objective to deliver a project of national importance and the Company’s larger effort at nation building.
When executing the OHE foundation, the team was struggling to shift foundation materials due to the tough terrain and lack of approach roads. “After studying the scenario, we decided to shift the foundation material through railway BRN and push trolleys in coordination with the Customer and NFR,” he shares. This way, the team completed executing the foundation work in time much to the Client’s satisfaction. Referring to the machinery being used at site, Golok mentions the use of JCB-mounted cranes for the mast erection work. “We have touched a high of 120 mast erections in three hours,” he smiles winningly, adding, “and we use M-Track to issue any material from the L&T store.”
Golok acknowledges that his steep learning curve has been thanks to the support and cooperation he has received at site. “Under the guidance of our Project Manager, Mr Debashis Manasranjan Aich, I have had the opportunity to learn various aspects of the OHE execution activities, implement the same, and gain appreciation both from our Client and our senior management.” He is thankful for the support from Anirban Chatterjee and Arun Kumar, both from Planning, and Anil Kumar, OHE, to adapt to L&T’s working procedures and methodologies.
A native of Patapur, Oupada, in Odisha’s Balasore district, Golok’s better half is Suchismita Mallick, a homemaker. His favourite pastimes are surfing the net and watching the news.
