He made his entry into L&T with a bang at the 796 sqm Pellet Plant Project for Tata Steel at Jamshedpur. “It was one of L&T’s first EPC-mode pellet plant projects,” says Manojit Das with some pride, and since then there has been no looking back as he has earned his spurs at 6 other projects. After his debut, he has been involved with a handful of Tata Steel projects including the 1.5 MTPA COB 10 and 11 at Jamshedpur, the 496 sqm Sinter Plant Project at Kalinganagar and the CDQ 10 & 11 Project again at Jamshedpur. Thereafter, he has been associated with JSW projects at Dolvi, Maharashtra, first at the COB A&B project, second at the Blast Furnace #2 Project and currently at the By-Product Plant at Tata Steel’s Kalinganagar project.
Being a brownfield job, Manojit and his team must face all the challenges of executing in a fully functioning environment, taking care not to interfere with other ongoing activities, lack of space, EHS considerations, and much more. “I take care of all the formalities and ensure safety precautions as per the requirements of Tata Steel’s operation team,” he conveys. “To meet the Client’s requirements, we have made a 4D model of the entire by-product plant area in BIM that helps us immensely to visualize the plan for material movement and crane placement for modular erections.” He nods and then adds that they have completed all the major erections in the module (the highest lift weight of 115 MT of the PGC) maintaining all the safety and quality parameters.
Manojit’s two other major responsibilities include developing subcontractors and grooming skilled manpower so that they can be carried forward to new and upcoming projects.
Manojit attributes his team’s success to their meticulous micro planning and reviews to ensure timely proactive action, maintaining constant touch and coordinating with the customer, suppliers, vendors, and sub-contractors to speed up erection works. He smiles with a thumbs-up, mentioning that he puts a huge premium on teamwork too. “We work as a team, and our seniors always guide me. My Project Manager is always supportive and gives me the freedom to handle pressure situations in my own style,” he says, thankful for his helpful eco-system.
Manojit is from Singur in West Bengal’s Hoogly District, and is married to Sudipta Jana Das, a homemaker, and the apple of their eye is their daughter, Srinithi. What thrills him is watching movies, and his most memorable moment was when he received his job offer letter from L&T.
A proud L&T-ite, who credits the organization for its processoriented approach to work, Manas Chandra Nayak possesses vast experience working at steel plants across India thanks to the ample opportunities that the Company has given him to hone his skills. He specially recalls his experience at the UAIL Alumina Refinery Expansion Project during the pandemic. “Considering the remoteness of our site location, it was extremely difficult to get the right people on time to execute. Having to think of alternate options, we went in for modular erection using man lifts at a height of 33 m to save time and cost since scaffolding would have required time and labour.” He adds with a smile that they completed the project on time and received some well-deserved appreciation from the customer.
Moving on to his present assignment at the 1.5 MTPA Expansion of Coke Oven Complex (Phase II) for Tata Steel at Kalinga Nagar, Odisha, Manas is focused on efficiency, productivity, inventory management, and using digital tools for seamless execution and progress tracking. “We keep a close eye on the critical activities and micro-plan each activity,” he points out, “while regular meetings with fitters and supervisors are ensuring clarity and direction before the start of any new job.”
Workmen motivation is equally important for progress, and the introduction of performance-based monthly prizes have helped to create a healthy, competitive environment that has translated into an appreciable improvement in speed and skills. The WISA App tracks workmen who have worked at L&T projects previously and aids in mobilizing them too. Construction being a highly labouroriented activity, Manas believes that it is important to provide workmen with timely payment and regular training to retain them.
“I would like to thank my senior team members for not just supporting me but also providing me with the freedom to implement my ideas and plans that have been key to our timely execution and customer appreciation,” he says, visibly pleased with their support and teamwork.
Manas comes from Jharsuguda in the state of Odisha and is married to Prabhati, who is a homemaker. He has two children, Yash and Anaisha, and his most cherished moment is when he saw his son for the first time. In his free time, he loves to swim and listen to music.
Having been a part of the Hot Strip Mill, LD#3 and Thin Slab Casting and Rolling, Pickling Line and Tandem Cold Mill, CAPL at Jamshedpur Tata Steel, SMS at KPO Tata Steel, SMS-1 SAIL Bokaro 1.5 MTPA Expansion, and CDQ-1 JSW Dolvi 5 MTPA Expansion Projects over the years, Chandan Kumar Paswan has a wealth of experience in piping work, boilers, and other equipment.
“The highlight of the CAPL Project was completing it 3–4 months ahead of schedule,” Chandan recalls with nostalgic fervour. “The management appreciated me for receiving the NMR Award in 2013 for successfully completing the hydraulic system including erection, hydro testing, pickling, and oil flushing of the system, which helped to start the equipment commissioning activity early, saving time in the process.” He also mentions the critical waste heat boiler at the CDQ-1 Dolvi Project and the hood cooling, lance cooling, fin fan building, and hood car piping work at the SMS KPO Project, both of which were completed well within time. Another of his favourites is the Hot Strip Mill Project, where the shutdown was completed in a record 18 days, by planning the pre-shutdown activities properly, like installing the hydraulic station, valve stand, and lubrication system.
Presently at the Coke Oven Battery Project at Kalinga Nagar for Tata Steel’s 1.5 MTPA Phase-II Expansion, Chandan is responsible for executing equipment and piping work on the boiler as well as structural work on the CDQ pipe rack, 2nd rail pipe rack, and conveyor gallery. “To expedite work, we constantly motivate our subordinates to achieve the set goals within the scheduled time while maintaining safety and quality,” he notes, also acknowledging the support and freedom he has received from his seniors, strengthening him to make some strong decisions for the project. “It is all thanks to their constant support and motivation that I have accomplished so much,” he says with obvious gratitude.
A native of Kajora More Andal, West Bengal, Chandan is married to Sarita Kumari, a homemaker. They are blessed with a son, Harshit, and a daughter, Sanaya. “The birth of my daughter is one of my most cherished moments,” he says happily. When he isn’t busy lending his piping expertise to projects, Chandan loves playing cricket, watching TV, and spending quality time with family and friends.
