SNS’s WED message

Dear Colleague,

This year’s theme for World Environment Day – Beat Plastic Pollution – seeks to raise awareness of a pressing problem that involves us all.

The world generates 280 million tonnes of plastic waste every year that is throwing our ecosystem completely out of gear. The effort, therefore, should be to restore our ecosystem, evolve means and methods to preserve our environment and re-learn how to peacefully co-exist with the planet we have inherited.

As is our wont, we at L&T have led the way by going green both in the new businesses we are pursuing and our actions on the ground. We have proudly internalised our ESG commitments, firmly focused on green supply chain management, circular economy, and biodiversity conservation. Apart from our over-arching aim to be Water Neutral by 2035 and Carbon Neutral by 2040, our green businesses that include solar, water, green hydrogen, and others have contributed Rs. 388.43 billion (38.2%) to our revenue in FY 2021–22. We have avoided 46,539 tCO2e of emissions, planted more than 1.5 million saplings, reduced water consumption by 3%, and recycled 48% of wastewater in the same period. Of our total electricity mix, 10% comes from renewable energy. What’s more, we even have built 40+ million sq. ft. of green buildings till date.

At all our offices and manufacturing facilities, we have been reducing the use of disposable plastic, particularly post-COVID. Recycled and eco-friendly material comprises 18% of the total bulk material consumed.

We must reaffirm our commitment to sustaining our planet. Let us all try to make small changes that will, eventually, make a big difference to our environment and our world. Let us reduce the use of plastic in our daily lives. At home, let’s segregate our garbage, and become aware of where we can avoid over-dependency on plastic, particularly
single-use plastic.

Every day should be considered as a World Environment Day because the threat to the earth is clear and present, and it must remain our constant endeavour to do the things that not only make India proud but the world too, by collectively striving for a cleaner, greener future.
